Gopal Misra, a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi, has always upheld the Gandhian ideals of truth, integrity, and public service. Throughout a distinguished journalistic career spanning more than four decades, he and his colleagues have remained firmly committed to the belief that every published word must be rooted in verified facts, sound reasoning, and professional ethics.

For Gopal Misra, responsible journalism demands fairness. No allegation should ever be published without first seeking the response of the person concerned. This fundamental principle has guided his work throughout his career and has enabled him to avoid sensationalism, media trials, and one-sided reporting.

Beyond the traditional responsibilities of journalism, Gopal Misra has consistently sought to highlight the concerns of those who continue to live on the margins of society despite India's remarkable economic progress. He believes that journalism must give voice to the underprivileged and remain committed to the values of justice, equality, and human dignity.

He also recognises that threats to press freedom no longer originate solely from governments. Increasingly, powerful economic interests and social pressures influence the functioning of the media, posing new challenges to independent and objective journalism.

As President of the Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ), Gopal Misra has continued to pursue these ideals with renewed determination, particularly following the passing of Comrade K. Vikram Rao, one of India's most respected champions of press freedom and journalists' rights. Rao endured numerous hardships while defending independent journalism and fearless reporting.

The struggle to secure fair wages, dignified working conditions, and professional rights for journalists has become considerably more difficult over the past two decades, particularly with the growing commercialisation of the media and the entry of foreign investment into the sector. Nevertheless, inspired by Vikram Rao's vision and unwavering commitment, the IFWJ leadership remains confident that these challenges can be overcome through determination, collective action, and principled leadership.

Today, Gopal Misra continues to carry forward the legacy of his distinguished predecessor. Indian journalism faces unprecedented challenges—not only in ensuring its own survival but also in preserving the professional standards that have defined its proud history.

The rapid growth of information technology and other high-paying industries has also resulted in an acute shortage of qualified journalists, making it increasingly difficult for news organisations to attract talented professionals.
